Do they actually see you as a leader? 2 steps to up-level your presence in a big way
Leadership presence - it's the invisible feel that makes or breaks you.
You know it when you feel it. That leader who steps into a room, and suddenly—boom—the energy shifts. People sit up a little straighter. Conversations pause. Even the air feels different. And when they speak? Everyone listens.
That’s presence. It’s not about being the loudest, the tallest, the best dressed or the most senior person in the room. It’s about how you show up—how you carry yourself, how you communicate, and how you command attention without demanding it.
Here’s the brutal truth: You can have game-changing ideas, a relentless work ethic, and years of experience… but if no one feels your presence, you’re getting overlooked.
So, how do you make sure your leadership presence is undeniable?
There are many ways to slice this pineapple pizza, but today the focus in on THE VOICE (not the tv show).
#1 Self-awareness – Presence starts from within. Before you can project confidence, you have to know:
who you are,
what you stand for,
and why it matters.
And listen, you can try to copy someone else’s presence, but it won’t stick. Presence isn’t about imitation; it’s about clarity and conviction.
Speak like a driver who knows the destination—eyes forward, trusting your brain, hands, and car to get you there. If you don’t believe in your message, why should anyone else?
And listen, if you think this stuff is fluff, think again - being grounded internally is fuel!
#2 Direct the emotional experience – Great leaders don’t just speak; they orchestrate. Want your audience to feel inspired? Challenged? Ready to charge through a brick wall? Decide on the emotional experience you’re creating and steer the room in that direction. Presence isn’t passive—it’s intentional.
A tip I share with anyone who wants to have a great meeting, an incredible presentation, or a jaw-dropping pitch - is: decide what you want the other to feel and decide who you need to be in order to get them there.
#3 Tactical tweaks come last – Stop obsessing over the ‘ums,’ ‘uhs,’ and ‘likes’ before you’ve nailed the big stuff.
The big stuff is # 1 & # 2 above.
Presence isn’t about eliminating filler words—it’s about conviction, clarity, and connection. Clean up the small stuff later. First, make people feel something when you speak.
Bringing back this core memory (76M views!!) to remind us all of what it costs us to not have presence - the thing makes or breaks us
Leadership presence isn’t magic. It’s a skill. And the leaders who develop it? They don’t just get noticed—they get remembered.
So, ask yourself: Do they see you as a leader, or just another voice in the room?
My best, always,
Shar
