Beyond the ordinary - the magic of asymmetric returns

Lately I've been thinking about asymmetric returns. You might guess at what this can mean, but here's the gist:

  1. One date turns into a 20-year long marriage to your best friend.

  2. One email to a stranger lands you the dream job.

  3. One book's teachings results in you losing 200 pounds.

  4. One podcast episode sparks the business idea that makes you millions.

  5. One “yes” to a party introduces you to your future best friend.

  6. One workout starts a fitness journey that changes your life.

  7. One cold DM leads to a mentor who changes your career.

  8. One online course gives you the skill to double your income.

  9. One free event introduces you to a life-changing community.

  10. One meal prep habit saves you $10,000 a year.

  11. One chance meeting on a flight connects you with an investor.

  12. One viral TikTok launches a six-figure side gig.

  13. One bold question in a meeting leads to a promotion.

  14. One volunteer gig opens doors to a whole new career.

You get it right, the one thing you can do can result in exponential results, instead of linear growth. Cutting up an apple into 8 slices gets you 8 slices of apples to eat (linear results). Cutting up an apple will not result in a magic buffet of cut up fruit at your table (exponential outcome.... and yummy).

Here's what we get wrong:

  • I've been on 20 dates already, why isn't it working?

  • I've applied to 50 jobs and no one is hiring anymore.

  • I've tried everything and I can't lose the weight

  • I've done the self-development thing and I'm over it

  • I've already spoken up in meetings and it doesn't matter

Sounds familiar? The essence of what we do wrong is -

I've already done the thing
I'm looking for my results
I'm not getting what I want
I doubt what I initially believed
I give up some/all of the actions.

One step in a daily 10k challenge can result in you completing a marathon next year.

One paragraph that you write can become the book that you publish 2 years from now.

One honest conversation can turn into a strong relationship with a family member

One yes can result in asymmetric returns if you allow it to.

Someone I know lost 200 pounds from reading The Obesity Code three times. He did the work.
Another someone I know had to cold DM their mentor every day for a year before they met in person. He did the work.

The essence here -

Do the work.
With unwavering belief.

Allowing the magic of asymmetric returns to work is the big leadership play. So take a moment today - and get into the mindset of doing the work to allow the magic of asymmetric returns - and rewrite the story.

It could be the turning point you’ve been waiting for.

My best, always,

Shar

Ps- 10 of those 14 things on the list above have happened to me.
